It is our pleasure to provide you with the most advanced, best possible care for your eyesight. Through the advancement of technology, you now have the option to choose the type of lens implant you wish to receive during your cataract surgery.
The toric lens is specifically for patients with astigmatism. This lens has the added benefit of greatly reducing your astigmatism along with correcting nearsightedness and farsightedness. Most patients will not need to wear glasses for distance tasks such as driving, TV or movies. You will need glasses for near tasks such as reading, playing cards or sewing.
Bifocal/Multifocal (ReStor and Crystalens) lenses have the added advantage of a built-in bifocal lens. Most patients with this lens implant will not have to wear glasses for either distance or near tasks. Some of these lenses require certain anatomic and optical circumstances to be right for your eye. After your exam, your doctor will be able to tell you if one of these lenses is right for you.
It is important to understand that Medicare and most commercial insurance policies include coverage for cataract surgery and exam fees. However, since there are added costs for these specialty lenses they are not a covered benefit. Many patients choose these lenses, however, because they prefer the opportunity to reduce their dependence on glasses. Your basic insurance benefits should remain unchanged regardless of which lens you choose.
