Astigmatism
Astigmatism is a common condition in which the cornea is irregularly curved, something known as a “refractive error.” (Link to “refractive error” education video) This can lead to objects at any distance appearing blurry or wavy. Astigmatism can be hereditary, or may be due to environmental or other causes.
What are the symptoms?
In addition to its effects on vision, astigmatism can produce headaches, eyestrain and eye fatigue.
How is astigmatism treated?
Astigmatism can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses.
A variety of refractive surgery options are also available to correct astigmatism, based on the needs of the individual. These include Alcon Toric lenses, an option for cataract patients with preexisting astigmatism.
Toric lens implants work together with eyeglasses to correct astigmatism at all distances. Replacing your eye’s natural lens, the Toric implant corrects either for near vision or distance vision; eyeglasses are then used to correct what the Toric lens does not.
Your Grossnickle doctor can discuss all appropriate options with you.
